About Yak Fiber

Yaks offer one of the world's finest natural fibers. Its characteristics place it in the same category as the world's other great fibers, cashmere and qiviut.

Yaks actually have three distinct fibers. The outer coat of guard hair is a very long and relatively coarse fiber. It remains on the yak all year and is used for rope, theatrical wigs, or the construction of flies for fishermen.

If you get up close and look under the guard hair, you find the good stuff–the down, and the mid-coat. The down consists of hairs that are approximately 1.5 inches in length. The hair diameter is less than 18 microns, rarely as few as 12 microns. The mid-coat hairs are almost twice as long and have a diameter that ranges up to about 30 microns.

The down and mid-coat are removed by combing. We comb our yaks starting in the spring as they lose their thick undercoats. It's a tedious labor of love; sometimes we'll only get three or four ounces of fiber from a yak per combing. Normally each yak is combed multiple times, and we average more than a pound of fiber per yak per spring season.

When a yak is combed, some of the guard hairs are naturally removed with the undercoat. For a high quality product, the coarse hair needs to be removed. We send our raw fiber to mills that have the equipment to dehair the raw fiber. The mills return dehaired fiber, roving, and assorted yarns.

All of our products are made from yak fiber collected by us, from our yaks, at our ranch. Unlike some, we purchase no cheap fiber from China.
